Zumba is a Latin dance-inspired fitness program created by Alberto "Beto" Perez in Colombia during the 1990s. Zumba involves dance and aerobic elements with moves from hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, and more.
In 1986, Perez improvised a class using Latin music when he forgot his aerobics tape. After success in Colombia, he brought Zumba to the U.S. in 2001, partnered with Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion, and launched it commercially.
Zumba classes typically last an hour with 12–14 songs, starting with warmups and ending with cooldowns. The playlist includes fast and slow tempos to keep energy high and make exercise fun.
Zumba routines use fast/slow music and resistance training. It includes many dance styles: salsa, cumbia, flamenco, belly dance, reggaeton, tango, and more. Classes vary by age and intensity, including Aqua Zumba.
Zumba has sold DVDs since 2002 and now offers video games and branded clothing.
